Do Indian passport holders need a transit visa for Tokyo Narita (NRT)?
No visa needed to connect to an international flight to a third country while staying in the transit area. Leaving it needs a Japanese visa or a discretionary shore pass.
For an airside connection at Narita International Airport, Japan: one ticket, bags checked through, onward flight to another country, no immigration.
Leaving the airport during the layover
All these passports need a Japanese visa (Indians can apply for the eVISA through an accredited agency). Immigration may instead grant a discretionary shore pass of up to 72 hours to stay near the airport.
Watch out
Transferring between Narita and Haneda, or onto a domestic flight, means entering Japan, so a visa is needed.
Checked on 25 October 2026 against these sources. Transit rules change often, and the airline and the immigration authority have the final say, so confirm with your airline before you travel.
