Where travel insurance is mandatory

Schengen area

Required

€30,000

minimum medical cover

Travel medical insurance of at least €30,000 is mandatory for a short-stay (type C) Schengen visa, and the consulate checks it before issuing the visa.

  • Valid in every Schengen country, not only the one you apply to
  • Covers the whole stay, from the day you enter to the day you leave
  • Pays for emergency medical treatment and hospital care
  • Pays for repatriation on medical grounds, and of remains in case of death
  • For a multiple-entry visa the policy must cover the first trip; the traveller signs that later trips will be insured too.
  • Some consulates accept only insurers on their own approved list, so check the checklist of the country you apply to.
  • Trip cancellation and baggage cover are optional for the visa.

  • Printed proof ready to show on arrival

United Arab Emirates (Dubai, Abu Dhabi)

Required

No fixed minimum

policy approved in the country

  • Approved in the UAE
  • Valid for the whole stay, and for each trip on a multiple-entry visa
  • Ask the visa issuer whether cover is already included with the visa before buying a second policy.
