A Mauritius honeymoon from India runs about 7 days and costs roughly ₹83,000 to ₹1.3 lakh per person, with no visa to apply for before you fly. Base yourself on the calm north coast for three nights and the dramatic south-west for three more, and you see most of what the island offers.
Visa and entry rules for Indians
Indian tourists do not obtain a visa in advance. India’s Ministry of External Affairs visa facility page lists Mauritius under “visa on arrival” for Indian nationals, and the Mauritius Passport and Immigration Office’s visa requirements page says the immigration officer makes the final decision to admit a non-citizen. We checked both on 10 October 2026.
What we could and could not confirm:
- Length of stay. The Mauritian page gives tourist stays as up to six months per calendar year, case by case. It does not state a figure for Indian passports. Travel sites report an initial 60 or 90 days, so do not plan beyond what your stamp says.
- Fee. Neither official page we could read states a fee. Travel sites describe entry as free for Indians. Do not pay anyone for a “visa”.
- Documents. The official page does not list them. The usual list on airline and agency pages is a passport valid for at least six months, a return or onward ticket, a confirmed hotel booking and proof of funds. Keep all of these on your phone and on paper.
- Travel form. Mauritius runs the All-in-One Travel Form (immigration, customs and health) on safemauritius.govmu.org. We could not read the page’s contents, so check the site for the filing window, which third parties give as 72 hours before arrival, and for any fee.
Look-alike “Mauritius visa” sites exist. The official form is on a govmu.org domain and an airline may ask you to show the confirmation before boarding.
What it costs in rupees
Per person, sharing a double room, 7 days and 6 nights in 3- and 4-star hotels on half-board with a hired car and driver for key days. These are our estimates for typical rates, not quotes. Prices rise 20–30% in July–August and around Christmas.
| Item | Approx. cost |
|---|---|
| Return flight, Mumbai or Delhi to Mauritius | ₹30,000 – ₹40,000 |
| Hotels, 6 nights (half of the double-room cost, with tax) | ₹30,000 – ₹55,000 |
| Lunches and drinks beyond half-board | ₹6,000 – ₹9,000 |
| Airport and inter-hotel transfers, driver for sightseeing | ₹6,000 – ₹9,000 |
| Catamaran cruise, island day trip, one paid experience | ₹8,000 – ₹13,000 |
| eSIM, insurance, small extras | ₹3,000 – ₹4,000 |
| Total | ₹83,000 – ₹1,30,000 |
Flights are the biggest single line, so fix your dates early. Packages often look cheaper, but check whether they include the airport transfers, a sightseeing driver and the catamaran. A honeymoon rate may add a free room upgrade or a dinner, so tell the hotel when you book and carry your marriage certificate.
Where to stay: north, west or south-west
- North (Grand Baie, Trou aux Biches, Mont Choisy): the most choice of restaurants, nightlife and shops, with calm water most of the year. Good for a first few nights.
- West (Flic en Flac, Tamarin): long beaches and the best sunsets. Quieter water, though in the winter months it is breezier.
- South-west (Le Morne): the Le Morne Brabant mountain, kitesurfing and the Chamarel hills. Wilder, windier and more private.
- East (Belle Mare, Trou d’Eau Douce): the departure point for Île aux Cerfs, with long beaches and big resorts. It faces the trade winds, which can make the sea choppy between May and October.
This plan uses the north and south-west, so you cross the island once.
Day-by-day plan: 7 days, two bases
Day 1: arrive and settle in the north
Land at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam airport in the south-east and transfer north, about an hour and a half by road. Walk Grand Baie’s waterfront at sunset and eat dinner by the bay.
Day 2: catamaran to the northern islets
Book a half-day catamaran from Grand Baie to the islets off the north coast, with snorkelling and a barbecue lunch. Compare two operators and confirm what is included.
Day 3: Port Louis and the garden
Go to Port Louis, with the Central Market and the Caudan Waterfront, and the Aapravasi Ghat, a UNESCO site recording the arrival of indentured labourers, mostly from India. Stop at Pamplemousses botanical garden on the way back.
Day 4: cross the island
Drive south via the crater lake of Grand Bassin, a Hindu pilgrimage site with a large Shiva statue, then Chamarel for the Seven Coloured Earth and its waterfall. Check in at Le Morne in the late afternoon.
Day 5: Le Morne
Spend the morning on the beach and the afternoon on a sunset walk. Couples who want it can book a helicopter or seaplane flight over the underwater waterfall. It is only visible from the air, so check the price before booking.
Day 6: Île aux Bénitiers or dolphins
Take a boat trip to Île aux Bénitiers with its lagoon and snorkelling, or a dolphin-watching morning off the west coast. Dolphin sightings are common but never guaranteed.
Day 7: fly home
The airport is about an hour to an hour and a half from Le Morne by road. Leave a buffer, and check the transfer time with your hotel.
Best time to go
May to June and September to November are the best months: dry, warm and cheaper than the peaks. July to August is cooler and busy, and December to April is hot and humid with rain and a cyclone risk, mostly January to March. Check the forecast the week you travel, because a cyclone warning can close the sea trips.
Practical tips
- Money: the rupee (MUR) is the local currency, and hotels bill in euros or US dollars. Use a forex card, and keep some cash for markets and tips.
- UPI: do not rely on it. Ask your bank about international UPI before you go.
- SIM: a prepaid tourist SIM or an eSIM bought before you fly avoids the airport queue.
- Plugs: Type C and G sockets at 230 V, so carry an adapter.
- Driving: traffic drives on the left, as in India. A driver for sightseeing days is easier than self-drive on the mountain roads.
- Food: vegetarian and Jain food is easy to arrange. Tell the hotel at booking and they will usually cook it.

Frequently asked questions
Do Indians need a visa for Mauritius?
Not one you apply for in advance. India's Ministry of External Affairs lists Mauritius among the countries giving Indian nationals a visa on arrival, and the immigration officer decides entry and the length of stay at the airport. Carry a return ticket, a confirmed hotel booking and proof of funds.
How long can an Indian tourist stay in Mauritius?
The Passport and Immigration Office says tourist stays are up to six months per calendar year, case by case, and that the immigration officer makes the final decision. Third-party sites report an initial grant of 60 or 90 days. Treat your stamp as the answer and ask the officer if you plan a longer trip.
Is Mauritius or the Maldives better for a honeymoon from India?
Mauritius gives you lagoon beaches plus mountains, waterfalls and towns to explore, with alcohol and Indian food widely available, and you can hire a driver for sightseeing. The Maldives suits couples who want only an overwater villa and a reef. Our budget estimate for Mauritius is ₹83,000 to ₹1.3 lakh per person for 7 days.
What is the best month for a Mauritius honeymoon?
May to June and September to November are the comfortable shoulder months, with dry weather and lower rates than the July–August and December peaks. The cyclone season runs from about January to March, so avoid it.
Is Mauritius good for vegetarians?
Yes. A large part of the population is of Indian origin, so vegetarian options such as dholl puri, gateaux piments (chilli fritters), vegetable curries and rotis are easy to find. Hotels with Indian restaurants will cook Jain food if you ask ahead.
Can I use UPI in Mauritius?
UPI and RuPay were linked to Mauritius in 2024, but acceptance outside a few large merchants is patchy, so do not rely on it. Carry a forex card and some US dollars or euros, which hotels and exchange counters take.
How do I see the underwater waterfall at Le Morne?
It is an optical illusion made by sand and silt flowing down the ocean floor, and it is only visible from the air. Helicopter and seaplane flights operate from the south-west; book through your hotel and check the price, which is a large part of the budget on that day.
