Four days is enough for Macau’s Portuguese-era old town, the village lanes of Taipa, the beaches of Coloane and a night on the Cotai Strip. Indian passport holders can enter visa-free for up to 30 days. Budget roughly ₹62,000 to ₹1.08 lakh per person, flights included.

Visa and entry rules for Indians

Indian passport holders do not need a visa for Macau, for up to 30 days. The Macao SAR government’s yearbook lists the countries and territories whose passport holders get visa-free access, and India appears with a 30-day maximum stay (Macao Yearbook 2025, visa-free list, checked on 14 October 2026). The yearbook refers readers to the Immigration Department of the Public Security Police for current conditions.

What we could not verify: the Public Security Police website did not load for us, so we have not confirmed the passport-validity rule or the extension process on an official page. Check them there before you book, and do not pay any site that offers to sell you a Macau “visa” or “e-visa” for an Indian passport.

Hong Kong and mainland China are separate. If you fly in via Hong Kong, Indian passport holders must first complete the free Pre-arrival Registration described in our Hong Kong 4-day guide. Mainland China entry (for example, crossing to Zhuhai) is a different regime that we did not check.

What it costs in rupees

Per person, two sharing a room, mid-range, four days and three nights. These are our estimates, not quoted fares.

Item Approx. cost
Return flights, India to Macau, one stop ₹35,000 – ₹55,000
Visa ₹0
Hotels, 3 nights (half the room cost) ₹12,000 – ₹26,000
Food, about ₹2,000 – ₹3,500 a day ₹8,000 – ₹14,000
Buses, taxis, ferry transfers ₹1,500 – ₹3,000
Macau Tower, museums, fortress, shows ₹2,500 – ₹5,500
eSIM, travel insurance, tips ₹3,000 – ₹4,500
Total ₹62,000 – ₹1,08,000

The low end is a three-star hotel on the peninsula and a cheap connecting fare. The high end is a Cotai resort room and weekend prices. Hotel rates jump on weekends and public holidays, so midweek stays save the most.

Getting there

There are few easy one-stop options, so compare fares to Macau (MFM) and to Hong Kong (HKG). Many travellers fly into Hong Kong and take the ferry or the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao bridge shuttle. Fly via Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur or Singapore if you want to skip the Hong Kong registration. Check current schedules, since routes change.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1: arrive and Senado Square

Check in near the old town. Walk Senado Square with its wave-pattern pavement and pastel colonial buildings, then follow the shop-lined lane up to the Ruins of St. Paul’s, the facade left from a 17th-century church. Eat dinner on a side lane rather than the main square.

Day 2: the historic centre

Visit A-Ma Temple, Mount Fortress for the city view and the Macau Museum, then the Lou Kau Mansion and Holy House of Mercy near the square. Spend the evening on the waterfront at the Macau Tower, where you can take the viewing deck or just photograph the skyline.

Day 3: Taipa and Cotai

Take a bus to Taipa Village, a small old quarter of pastel houses, temples and snack shops. In the evening cross to the Cotai Strip, where the big resorts have indoor canals, light shows and free shuttle buses. You do not have to gamble to walk through them.

Day 4: Coloane and departure

Spend a slow morning in Coloane, a quiet village with a small square, the yellow-fronted chapel of St Francis Xavier and a beach, then leave for the airport or the ferry.

Eating in Macau as an Indian traveller

Expect Cantonese and Macanese food: pork, seafood, rice and noodles. Vegetarians should ask for vegetable and tofu dishes, plain noodles and congee without meat stock, and order the famous egg tarts, which are vegetarian but contain egg. Jain travellers should carry packaged food and check each dish. A few Indian restaurants operate in the city, but check recent reviews and opening hours before you plan around one.

Best time to go

October to December is dry and mild. March is also pleasant. June to September is hot, humid and typhoon season, so keep dates flexible. Weekends and holiday periods raise hotel prices.

Practical tips

  • Money: the pataca is pegged near the Hong Kong dollar, and Hong Kong dollars are widely accepted. UPI does not work, so use a forex card and carry some cash.
  • SIM: an eSIM bought before you fly saves queueing at the airport.
  • Plugs: Macau generally uses the UK three-pin plug (Type G), so pack an adapter.
  • Transport: buses cover the peninsula, Taipa and Coloane, and casino shuttle buses are free for everyone.
  • Walking: the old town is hilly and humid. Wear comfortable shoes.
  • Paperwork: keep your passport, hotel booking and return ticket handy for the border.

Macau pairs naturally with Hong Kong in 4 days. For a longer East Asia trip see the Taiwan 7-day itinerary or the Japan cherry blossom plan. More facts are on the Macau hub.

Frequently asked questions

Do Indians need a visa for Macau?

No. The Macao SAR government's list of visa-free passport holders, as published in its 2025 yearbook, gives India a maximum stay of 30 days. You still need a valid passport and should carry your onward ticket and hotel booking. We could not open the Public Security Police page itself, so confirm the passport-validity rule there before you fly.

Is Macau part of China for visa purposes?

Macau is a Special Administrative Region with its own immigration control, and the visa-free rule above applies to Macau only. Crossing the land border into Zhuhai means entering mainland China, which has its own rules and is not covered by the Macau exemption. We did not check mainland entry rules, so confirm them with the Chinese authorities before planning that.

Do I need the Hong Kong registration if I fly via Hong Kong?

If you enter Hong Kong, Indian passport holders must complete the free online Pre-arrival Registration first. Our Hong Kong guide covers it. Flying via Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur or Singapore avoids the step.

How many days are enough for Macau?

Three full days cover the old town, Taipa and Coloane without rushing, which is why this plan is four days with an arrival day. Macau is small, so a long weekend works, but pairing it with Hong Kong makes a better use of the flight cost.

How much does a Macau trip cost from India?

Roughly ₹62,000 to ₹1.08 lakh per person for four days, two sharing a room, mid-range, with return flights. The flight is the biggest line item, because most itineraries from India connect through another hub.

Is Macau good for vegetarians?

Manageable with planning. Macanese and Cantonese food leans on pork, seafood and meat stock, so ask for vegetable dishes, tofu, noodles without meat stock and egg tarts, and look up Indian and vegetarian restaurants before you arrive. Carry some packaged snacks.

Can I use UPI in Macau?

Do not rely on it. Carry a forex card or an international Visa or Mastercard, keep some patacas or Hong Kong dollars in cash for small eateries, and use a local transport card or cash on buses.
