Eight days is enough for Banff and Jasper from India: three nights around Banff and Lake Louise, two in Jasper, and a loop back through Yoho. Budget roughly ₹2,25,000 to ₹3,15,000 per person, and treat the visa as your first task, because Indian passport holders need a Canadian visitor visa before they can book anything non-refundable.
Visa and entry rules for Indians
Indian citizens need a visitor visa for Canada. We checked these official Canada.ca pages on 10 October 2026:
- The entry-requirements page lists India among visa-required countries. The visa is needed whether you arrive by air, car, train, bus or boat, and it does not appear in the eTA lists. The eTA page says an eTA needs a passport from a visa-exempt country, so it is not an option for an Indian passport.
- The visitor visa page lists a CAD 100 processing fee and a CAD 85 biometrics fee per person. You apply online through the IRCC portal, pay at the end, and book the biometrics appointment once you get the instruction letter.
- Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your travel date. The visa can be valid up to 10 years or until your passport or biometrics expire, but the border officer decides how long you may stay each time. We did not find a general maximum stay for tourists on that page.
- Processing time: IRCC does not publish a fixed figure. Use its processing-times tool, choose “Visitor visa (from outside Canada)” and India, and add margin. The tool’s result is not a guarantee.
- Documents: the page recommends travel history, an itinerary, six months of bank statements and an employer letter. If you will stay with family or friends, add a letter of invitation and proof of your relationship.
Apply only on the official portal. Look-alike sites charge service fees on top of CAD 185. Do not buy flights until the visa is approved, and make the first hotel bookings cancellable.
What it costs in rupees
Per person, two sharing a room and a rental car, mid-range, 8 days and 7 nights in July or August. CAD is converted at about ₹63; these are our estimates, not quotes, and Rockies rooms in peak season swing a lot.
| Item | Approx. cost |
|---|---|
| Return flight, Delhi or Mumbai to Calgary (one stop) | ₹80,000 – ₹1,15,000 |
| Visitor visa and biometrics, CAD 185 | ₹11,700 |
| Hotels, 7 nights (half the room cost) | ₹55,000 – ₹75,000 |
| Rental car for 7 days, fuel and insurance, shared by two | ₹28,000 – ₹40,000 |
| Food, about ₹4,000 – ₹5,000 a day | ₹30,000 – ₹40,000 |
| Park pass, gondola, Maligne cruise, Moraine Lake shuttle | ₹15,000 – ₹25,000 |
| Travel insurance, eSIM, small extras | ₹5,000 – ₹8,000 |
| Total | ₹2,25,000 – ₹3,15,000 |
Flight fares move a lot with season; we saw return fares from Mumbai and Delhi to Calgary of roughly ₹80,000 and up for dates in 2026. There is no non-stop flight to Calgary, so the cheaper itineraries connect in Europe or the Gulf. A package tour from an Indian operator costs more because it adds guides and meals; independent travel in a shared car is the cheapest way to see the same places.
Parks Canada passes: the Banff fees page lists CAD 12.25 per adult per day, youth under 18 free, and a CAD 83.50 Discovery Pass for a year. Past about seven paid days the annual pass is cheaper, and a pass also matters because you cross into Yoho and Jasper. Check on the Parks Canada site which parks your pass covers.
Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1: Calgary to Banff
Pick up the car at Calgary airport, buy groceries, and drive 90 minutes west to Banff. Walk Banff Avenue, then watch the sunset at Surprise Corner above the Fairmont Banff Springs.
Day 2: Banff town
Ride the Banff Gondola up Sulphur Mountain, walk Bow Falls and take the loop around Lake Minnewanka. Elk graze in town in the evening; keep 30 metres away.
Day 3: Lake Louise and Moraine Lake
Book the Moraine Lake shuttle first. Private cars are not allowed on Moraine Lake Road, which is open only from June to mid-October; the 2026 season shuttle was about CAD 12.75 per adult round trip plus a small booking fee, with seats released on the Parks Canada reservation system, though we could not open that page today. Visit Moraine Lake in the morning, then Lake Louise in the afternoon. Hikers can do the Lake Agnes teahouse trail.
Day 4: Icefields Parkway to Jasper
Drive the Icefields Parkway, about 230 km of glaciers and turquoise lakes, with stops at Peyto Lake, Bow Lake and the Columbia Icefield. Allow all day. Fill the tank at Lake Louise, because services on the way are sparse. Check road and wildfire notices on the Parks Canada site before leaving, particularly in July and August.
Day 5: Jasper
Take the Maligne Lake road to the lake, Maligne Canyon and the Spirit Island cruise, which runs in season. Stop at Athabasca Falls on the way back. In the evening, look for elk and deer around town; keep your distance from bears (100 metres) and carry bear spray if you hike.
Day 6: Jasper to Lake Louise via Yoho
Drive south, leaving early. Stop at the Columbia Icefield if you missed it, then cross into Yoho National Park for Emerald Lake and the natural bridge.
Day 7: Johnston Canyon and Calgary
Walk the catwalks at Johnston Canyon, drive to Canmore for lunch and return to Calgary. Return the car with a full tank.
Day 8: fly home
Allow three hours for international check-in. Flights to India usually leave in the afternoon or evening, so you can fit in a last breakfast.
Food for Indian travellers
Calgary has many Indian restaurants and Indian groceries, which makes it the best place to stock up for the Rockies. Banff and Jasper have a few Indian options but prices are high. Vegetarians do fine with pasta, veggie burgers, falafel and salads. Carry roasted snacks and instant meals for the Parkway, and ask for no cheese or onion if you are Jain.
Best time to go
June to mid-September is the main window. July and August are warmest, with every lake and road open, but very crowded. September has golden larches on high trails and cheaper rooms. October to April is cold and several roads and lakes are closed, which makes this particular itinerary hard. Winter tire rules apply from 1 November on the Parkway.
Practical tips
- Money: cards and tap payments work everywhere. UPI is not accepted. Carry a forex card, and keep a little cash for parking machines.
- SIM: an eSIM bought before you fly is easiest; coverage is patchy on the Parkway, so download offline maps.
- Driving: Canada drives on the right. Check with your rental company about your Indian licence, and carry an International Driving Permit.
- Plugs: Canada uses North American flat-pin plugs, 120 V. Pack an adapter.
- Wildlife: never feed or approach animals, and keep food locked away.
- Book early: rooms in Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper sell out months ahead for July and August.

Frequently asked questions
Do Indians need a visa for Canada?
Yes. Canada's entry-requirements page lists India as a visa-required country: you need a visitor visa to enter by any route, air, land or sea. Indian citizens are not on the list of visa-required countries that may use the CAD 7 eTA instead.
How much is the Canada tourist visa fee from India?
IRCC's page lists CAD 100 for the visitor visa and CAD 85 for biometrics per person, so CAD 185 or roughly ₹11,700 at ₹63 per CAD. Both are paid online at the end of the application. The fee is not refunded if the visa is refused.
How long does a Canada visitor visa take for Indians?
IRCC publishes no fixed number. Its processing-times tool gives the current estimate for India, and the result is not a guarantee. Apply at least three months before travel, and book the biometrics appointment as soon as you get the instruction letter.
How many days do you need for Banff and Jasper?
Eight days with seven nights covers Banff, Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, the Icefields Parkway and two nights in Jasper without rushing. Five days works if you skip Jasper and stay around Banff and Lake Louise, but the long flight makes a short trip poor value.
Is a car necessary in Banff and Jasper?
For this itinerary, yes. Banff town has Roam public buses, and Moraine Lake is reached by Parks Canada shuttle, but the Icefields Parkway, Maligne Lake and Yoho are far easier with a rental car or a guided day tour. Two sharing a car is also cheaper than tours for each of you.
Can Indian vegetarians eat well in the Canadian Rockies?
Yes, with some planning. Banff and Jasper have Indian restaurants and plenty of vegetarian dishes in ordinary cafes. Stock up at a supermarket in Calgary or Banff for picnic lunches, since some Parkway stretches have no food for 100 km.
What is the best time to visit Banff and Jasper from India?
July and August are warmest and busiest, with every road and lake open. June has fewer people and waterfalls at full flow. September brings golden larches and cheaper rooms. Moraine Lake Road is open only from June to mid-October, so winter trips lose that stop.
